Nagoya University | Japan

Kunhyui Kim is an international economist whose research focuses on international trade, non-tariff measures (NTMs), global value chains (GVCs), and the quality of traded goods, with particular emphasis on East and Southeast Asian economies. His work examines how regulatory policies, technical standards, and trade-related frictions affect firm behavior, trade margins, foreign direct investment, and product quality. A significant strand of his research analyzes the economic impacts of COVID-19, including household coping strategies, human capital development, and the role of government support and fintech in sustaining informal businesses across ASEAN countries. He has contributed to policy-oriented research through publications with the Asian Development Bank Institute and the Economic Research Institute of ASEAN and East Asia, addressing issues such as regional cooperation on NTMs, regulatory divergence, and compliance costs in trade. His methodological approach combines structural trade models, including extensions of the Eaton–Kortum framework, with empirical analysis using cross-country and firm-level data. Kim has actively presented his research at major international conferences and workshops, covering topics such as GVC determinants, technical regulations, investment decisions, innovation incentives, and trade policy uncertainty. Overall, his scholarship bridges academic trade theory and applied policy analysis, offering insights relevant to regional economic integration, trade governance, and development strategies in Asia.
